Side by side
Better I18N and Transifex, row by row
Not checkmarks — what each platform does, what is metered, and what costs extra.
| Feature | Better I18N | Transifex |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Published plans priced on keys, with a free tier. Monthly, no annual commitment required. | Plans banded by hosted-word volume, monthly or annual (annual gives two months free). Self-serve signup available. |
| Entry price | $0 on the free tier, upgradeable in the dashboard. | Starter from $160/month monthly, or $135/month billed annually, rising with the word band. |
| How usage is counted | Translation keys. A key costs the same whether you ship it in 2 locales or 20. | Hosted words: source words translated into a specific language. Identical duplicates count once and untranslated languages do not count — but every language you actually translate into does. |
| Who counts as a user | Your whole team plus external translators, with no per-collaborator charge. | Collaborators include everyone on a project — your developers and managers plus the translators and reviewers you work with. |
| AI translation | Included: glossary enforced, brand tone applied, ICU plural categories preserved. | A paid AI Words add-on from $84/month. Annual Growth and Enterprise+ include 60,000 or 300,000 AI words per year; past the limit AI features pause until you top up. |
| CDN delivery | Included on every plan. Edge-cached JSON, 60s max-age, always answers HTTP 200. | |
| Over-the-air updates | Built into the SDKs, including Expo and React Native — no app store round trip. | |
| Git workflow | Repo is the source of truth. Keys discovered from source, changes arrive as pull requests. | CI/CD integrations for continuous localization are a documented use case. |
| CLI and SDKs | One CLI (scan, sync, check, publish) and first-party SDKs for React, Next.js, Expo, Remix, Vite, Hono/Node, Swift and Flutter. | CLI and API available across major platforms. |
| AI agent access (MCP) | First-party MCP server. Claude, Cursor and Copilot read and write keys directly — 12 tools, no glue code. | |
| Type safety | Typed keys with editor autocompletion; a renamed key fails the build, not production. | |
| Time to first translated string | Install one package, add the provider, ship. No project wizard, no file mapping. | Self-serve signup, then project and resource configuration before the first sync. |
| Documentation | Framework-specific quick starts that get you running in under five minutes. | Extensive help centre and developer documentation. |
| Security and compliance | TLS 1.3 in transit, GDPR/CCPA/LGPD handling, Cloudflare edge infrastructure. |

Pricing
Word bands, plus a separate bill for AI
The plan price moves with your word volume, and the AI features most teams want are a second line item.
Their published bands
Transifex prices the Starter plan in bands by hosted words, from $160 up to $510 per month billed monthly, or $135 to $425 billed annually. To their credit, hosted words are counted per language you actually translate into, not multiplied by every configured language. The catch is elsewhere: the full AI suite is a separate AI Words add-on from $84 per month, and when the allowance runs out AI features pause until you buy more.
Starter bands as published on their pricing page on the date in the disclaimer below. Annual billing is advertised as two months free.
What Better I18N includes instead
AI translation with no add-on
Glossary-aware, tone-aware translation is part of the plan. Nothing pauses when a word allowance runs out.
Edge CDN delivery on every plan
Translations served from the nearest edge with a 60-second cache — included on the free tier.
MCP server for AI agents
Your coding agent manages keys and translations directly, with no integration work.
A free tier that does not expire
Keep a real project on it while you evaluate, and upgrade when your key count requires it.
Migration
Moving off Transifex takes an afternoon
Your translations are yours. Nothing here requires a services engagement.
Export what you have
Download your resources, translations and glossary from Transifex in JSON, XLIFF or CSV. Your translation memory comes with you.
Import keys and translations
Push them in one pass with the CLI, the dashboard importer, or the MCP server if you would rather have your agent do it.
Point your app at the SDK
Swap the loader for our SDK. Existing key names and namespaces are preserved, so no component changes.
Verify, then publish
Run the CLI check for missing keys, compare coverage per locale, then publish. The CDN purge is automatic.
Run both platforms in parallel as long as you like — importing here deletes nothing on the Transifex side.
